Reflective clothing was not tried on British Railways until 1964. A study done in Australia in 2009 concluded that reflective clothing is more effective at keeping you safe than neon clothing. In particular, the reflective strips seem to be best for cyclists.

A more modern study conducted in Canada in 2013 found that wearing reflective clothing can reduce the risk of collisions by 38%, and as the number of accidents increases each year, it is important to take steps to reduce the risk of collisions.
